SQPA bids Nelson goodbye

Those who have come to know and love William Nelson came to bid him farewell at the most recent meeting of the Southern Queens Park Association (SQPA).
Nelson, who has served as president of the SQPA for the past five years, will be moving on to a new position. His last day will be Friday, October 19.
“It’s been a labor of love,” said Nelson. “I’m excited about the new challenges, but I want to stay connected [with the SQPA].”
During Nelson’s tenure, various capital projects were undertaken and numerous programs were begun — and expanded.
For example, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will serve a projected 1,000 children next year — up from 200 when it first began.
Another after school program has also been launched at P.S. 118, bringing the total number of sites to three.
And the Young Adult Internship Program is helping to place 16- to 24-year-olds in “meaningful” internships with academic support.
“With all the services we provide, this community can go very far,” said Nelson.
He informed those in attendance that Borough President Helen Marshall and Councilmember Leroy Comrie have allocated funds for a “brand new space for community use” within Roy Wilkins Park. In addition, Marshall has given $800,000 for the south bunker, meaning six additional classrooms, office space and bathrooms. Comrie has also promised $275,000 for additional work on a wrought iron fence to secure the park. And Assemblymember William Scarborough has allocated money for a marquee sign that will inform the community of events.
“The need is there, that’s why we continue to push,” said Nelson, who assured attendees that the SQPA will be in good hands after he has left, and that he will still play a role.
“I will maintain a relationship with the Advisory Committee,” he said.
He reminded everyone that although much has been done, more needs to be accomplished, and that the SQPA always welcomes volunteers.
“Although the number [of volunteers] has gone up, we still need more,” he said.
