In order to better serve the Jewish community, the Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, located in Jamaica Hills, has opened a kosher kitchen while expanding other Shabbos and Yom Tov programs.
“We want to be able to provide for the community,” said Gerald Hart, the Executive Director of Margaret Tietz. “That’s what we’re here for.”
The center had a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new kosher kitchen on Thursday, May 15. Community rabbis were present for it, as well as Senator Toby Ann Stavisky and Councilmember James Gennaro.
“This is a complete home,” said Margaret Tietz Medical Director Dr. Nookala V. Reddy. “You made it complete. Until now, we didn’t have a kosher kitchen.”
The Glatt Kosher kitchen, which is under the supervision of Rabbi Zavel Pearlman and is also being supervised by the Vaad of Queens, is already serving 20 residents. Hart said they have gotten rave reviews for the food so far, and also added that there is no limit as to how many the kitchen can serve.
The kitchen was made possible through Margaret Tietz partner Beth Abraham Family of Health Services. Its CEO, Michael Fassler, said that planning for the new kitchen began about a year ago and that many rabbis were involved in the process.
Also at Margaret Tietz, there is a non-electric entrance and a Shabbos apartment. They are also in the process of putting in a Shabbos elevator.
“As we identify needs, Beth Abraham is committed to provide the service necessary to make people comfortable being here,” Fassler said.
A 200-bed facility, Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation was founded in 1971. Its other services include long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, a holistic program, hospice/palliative care and adult day health care. They also offer physical, occupational and speech therapies.
The Margaret Tietz Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is located at 164-11 Chapin Parkway in Jamaica Hills.
