Schneider’s Hospital named to top 30 list

Once again, Schneider Children’s Hospital has been listed by U.S. News & World Report on their top 30 list of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.”
Located in New Hyde Park, Schneider Children’s Hospital opened in 1983. It currently has 154 beds.
The new listing marks the second year in a row that it has been ranked in the top 30 by U.S. News & World Report. The long-standing reputations and percentage of satisfactory outcomes of the hospitals are evaluated while determining the rankings. Other factors that are considered include “patient volume, nursing care, advanced technology, and recognition by outside organizations.”
Schneider Children’s Hospital was one of three in New York State to make the list. It also received high marks in the specialty areas of digestive disorders, neurology, and neurosurgery.
“This study reaffirms Schneider Children’s Hospital’s standing as one of the best in the United States,” said its Executive Director and Chief of Staff, Dr. Philip Lanzkowsky. “We are very proud of this distinction, which comes as we begin the celebration of our hospital’s 25-year history of service to this community.”
Last year, the hospital began phase one of a $110 million expansion project. The first part, which will cost $23.6 million, will create an addition to the neonatal intensive care unit, an 8,500-square-foot pediatric ambulatory chemotherapy unit, and will build a new enclosed glass atrium that will have a performance stage, winter garden and areas for pet, music, and art therapy.
During the second phase of the project, a new $87 million pavilion will be built. It will be four stories and will include the first stand-alone emergency department for children in the region. It will also have a state-of-the-art imaging center, a 25-bed pediatric intensive care unit, and a 25-bed medical-surgical unit. It is anticipated that phase two will begin in fall of 2008.
