Tennis Association Holds First Opening Meeting of 2008 Season

The North Shore Towers Tennis Association held its first opening meeting of the new season on Wednesday, May 14.
“We hope to have a fun, spectacular summer,” association president Annelies Karp said as she began the meeting.
Towers Tennis Pro Ron Rodriguez has returned for his second season and spoke about what he and his staff have to offer tennis members.
“I think we all know we have one of the best facilities in New York City and Long Island, and certainly one of the best staffs,” Rodriguez said. “I think we have one of the strongest staffs assembled anywhere and certainly in this area.”
Rodriguez also said that the men’s tennis players will be participating in a senior league and the ladies will be playing in an “over 60 league.”
Association co-Vice President Jerry Rubin encouraged the tennis players to mix with one another and play with others of varying ability. She also told members that there are always valuable starters available to them to use as hitting partners if they have no one to play with.
“It’s a wonderful sport…and I feel it’s a very congenial group,” she said.
At the meeting, members briefly discussed the possibility of having some events where they would mix with the golfers.
Karp also highlighted some of the special events that will be taking places throughout the season. On Sunday, June 8, there will be a special tennis event where all residents of North Shore Towers will be invited to come to the courts and learn more.
This season there will also be “Monday Night Mixers.” There will be no set games, with the pros mixing and matching players. Karp said that will also be other fun things to do during those nights.
Weather permitting, on Saturday and Sunday mornings there will be coffee, bagels and cream cheese for members.
Along with having special holiday events throughout the season, other events include “Breakfast at Wimbledon,” a pot luck dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society, and gathering to watch the U.S. Open finals, among others. The Towers will also once again host two USTA Juniors tournaments during the summer.
The schedule of events is subject to change. Event details and sign up sheets will be posted on the tennis bulletin board, which is located by the Pro Shop.
In order to solicit feedback from members, Karp said they will be creating a wish box.
“This is your tennis community and we want your input on what you would like to have,” Karp said.
Karp announced that this season, following many requests by tennis members, there will be portable restrooms by the courts for players to use.
Karp also said that there is the possibility of having one day a week where tennis members could bring in someone outside of the Towers as a free guest. However, it would have to be a different person each week.
Country Club Committee Chair Mort Gitter spoke briefly near the conclusion of the meeting, welcoming the players and saying that he hopes for a great season. He also encouraged people to have their family members take advantage of the newly offered family membership.
