Family Fun Day set for July 19

The 7th annual St. Alban’s Family Day Festival will be held on Saturday, July 19 at St. Alban’s Park, between Merrick Boulevard and Sayers Avenue, from noon to 4 p.m. Residents, young and old, are invited to enjoy a fun-filled event featuring entertainment, health screenings, arts & crafts, free rides and barbecue food. Sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Southern Queens Park Association, with the support of public funding allocated by City Councilmember Leroy Comrie, the event is designed to urge the community to come together to participate in events that will foster family unity.
As in previous years, Family Day will be immediately followed by the 6th annual St. Albans Jazz Festival, which will jam in St. Albans Park from 4 to 10 p.m. This free concert will feature Grammy Award-nominee Miki Howard, the Bill Jacobs Ensemble, the Jackson Brothers and the Bartlett’s Jazz Ensemble. Under the direction of the Black Spectrum Theatre Company, this annual jazz showcase is supported by Comrie, State Senator Malcolm Smith, Assemblymember William Scarborough and the local business community. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a chair and/or blanket. Admission to the St. Alban’s Family Day and Jazz Festivals is absolutely FREE.
Comrie is asking everyone who attends the festivals to consider donating a pair of new shoes for poor children living in rural townships of South Africa. The shoe drive is the brainchild of Global Soles, a New York City-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing footwear for underprivileged youth in third world nations across the globe. Collection bins will be available at the park.
St. Albans Family Day is conducted in the memory of the late Katherine Tennyson, a former colleague of Comrie’s, whose vision and efforts led to the creation of events like this festival.
