Doggie daycare opens in LIC

Leading a dog’s life could be great - if you are a camper at Camp Bow Wow Long Island City, a newly-opened doggie daycare facility where dogs can stay during the day and overnight.
Located on 47-16 Austell Place, the facility offers fun activities for dogs of different sizes and breeds.
Camp Bow Wow Long Island City, a franchise, can accommodate about 60 dogs in its 8,000-square-foot facility, which used to be a textile factory. Now it has 25 dogs, said Elisabeth Anson, general manager (Lead Dog).
To become a camper, the pet goes through a process called interviewing: on its first visit, it is placed in the company of a male and female dog so the staff can see how it interacts with them, said Stephen Neagus, camp director (Top Dog). “Everybody here has to get along. We don’t like aggressive dogs,” he said.
Once the dog is accepted in the camp, for $32 per day and about $50 for an overnight stay, counselors take care of it - they make sure it gets enough rest and that the play with the other dogs doesn’t get rough. These counselors, one for every 15 dogs, can also give the dog a bath, which costs between $25 and $35, or trim its nails for seven dollars.
The dogs that stay overnight also receive a hollow cone-shaped rubber toy filled with a piece of dog biscuit and peanut butter that they can lick before going to sleep. “It’s kind of like giving them a book to read before going to bed,” Anson explained.
The facility has a webcam that allows owners to watch their pets from anywhere around the world once they go online.
