Collegiate workshops coming up

How can you pay for college? What type of students are colleges looking for? What are the alternatives to college education? Youngsters and their families can find answers to questions like these during upcoming free college fairs and workshops hosted by Queens Library.
“Many, many people assume that they’re not going to be able to afford college,” said Joanne King, associate director of marketing and communications at Queens Library. “You don’t know where to look for scholarship money. You don’t know what you don’t know,” King said.
To help fight this problem, Queens Library will hold two college fairs in October, which it considers Higher Education Month. Both fairs will be attended by dozens of schools such as Bard College, Johnson & Wales University, Tuskegee University and the University of Virginia. No registration is necessary.
The first fair will be on October 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the library’s Long Island City branch, at 37-44 21st Street.
The second fair will be on October 25, again from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Flushing branch, at 41-17 Main Street.
During October, the library will also hold a number of workshops on a variety of topics such as practical training, SAT preparation and admission essays. The number of seats for these is limited, so calling the library ahead of time is a good idea, King advised. A full list of all the workshops’ times and locations is available on Queens Library’s website, queenslibrary.org, in the events category.
Last year was Queens Library’s first college fair year and hundreds of people showed up, said King.
