Learn to save a life

Heart problems are the leading killer in the U.S.; about half of those deaths - over 300,000 Americans year, according to figures - aren’t heart attacks at all, but “sudden cardiac arrest.”
It’s “an abrupt loss of heart function” according to the American Heart Association and when the heart abruptly stops beating, for every minute that passes, chances of survival drop by seven to 10 percent.
In two out of three cases there is scarring from a previous heart attack and 90 percent of the time two or more major coronary arteries are blocked. But in some cases, the first symptom is death.
Many victims could be saved if people were trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) according to American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY).
In less time than you think, ARC training will provide the vital knowledge and skills for everyone to respond to a life-threatening situation with confidence.
AED devices can be found in many public places, health clubs and schools. In New York State, trained persons using them are considered first-aid providers and are protected under the “Good Samaritan Law.”
In November, CPR/AED classes are being offered by the ARC/GNY in Queens at 138-02 Queens Boulevard in Briarwood (718-558-0053.)
