Members of the Sacred Heart Cub Scouts Pack 427 now have a new aluminum Pinewood Derby Track that they will be able to utilize for their races at the Sacred Heart school in Glendale.
City Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley participated in the Sacred Heart Cub Scout Pack 427 ribbon cutting for the new Pinewood Derby Track on Friday, January 8 when the Cub Scouts held their annual races.
“I am a proud supporter of the Sacred Heart Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts learn important skills such as teamwork, how to set goals and achieve them and giving back to the community,” Crowley said. “That is why I believe it was so important to replace the Pinewood Derby track to serve as an arena for community service, youth development and most importantly, unity and family involvement.”
Crowley, a long-time supporter of the Sacred Heart Cub Scouts, recruited financial donors to help with the project.
“We had help from Moose Lodge 1642, the Glendale Kiwanis, American Legion, Astoria Federal Bank, Ridgewood Savings Bank and especially from Elizabeth Crowley – she funded us the most,” said outgoing Cub Master Steve Hansen, who was thrilled with the number of organizations that were willing to help.
Each year, members of Sacred Heart Cub Scouts Pack 427 design and build their own Pinewood Derby cars that they race in a yearly competition held at the school. The old track, which had been used for many years contained water damage so the scout group was thrilled that they received additional funding for the new aluminum track, according to Hansen.
