In a disappointing end to a forgettable season, the Queens College (QC) Knights were swept in three games by Bridgeport to close out the 2010 campaign. The Knights lost the first game of a doubleheader in quiet fashion, falling 3-0 on Saturday, May 1. The second game of the twin bill seemed well on its way to a Knights victory with QC leading by five runs with two outs in the bottom of the last inning. But it wasn’t meant to be as the Knights snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, losing 8-7 after allowing Bridgeport to rally for six runs with two outs. The Knights then dropped the season finale to Bridgeport, 7-6, on Sunday, May 2. Leadoff hitter David Fisher connected for three hits, including a home run, and stole his league leading 28th base of the season in the losing effort. Queens College finished their season with an 18-28 mark.
In a bright spot for the Knights, senior Jeffrey Gomez was named to the all-East Coast Conference second team in a poll taken from the league’s head coaches. The designated hitter was second on the Knights in hitting with a .300 average; he notched seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and 16 RBI in 120 at bats over 40 games.
St. John’s University won its sixth-straight Big East series by taking two of three against the University of South Florida (USF). The Red Storm won the second game of the series, 8-3, behind pitcher Kyle Hansen’s seven strikeouts in seven innings and a sixth inning that saw the Johnnies tally four runs. Jimmy Parque and Sean O’Hare had three hits apiece and Paul Karmas and Joe Panik knocked in two RBI each. Hansen (7-1) won his fourth straight start.
St. John’s took the rubber game of the three game set in walk-off fashion, defeating USF 6-5 behind Matt Wessinger’s game-winning hit in the bottom of the last inning. Wessinger went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Jimmy Parque was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kevin Kilpatrick (1-1) worked 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win retiring 11 in a row to finish the game.
After helping the Johnnies win the series, Parque was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll batting .588 (10-for-17) on the week. The outfielder had one double, five RBI and three runs scored to earn the honor, the second of his career. Parque currently ranks second in the Big East with a team-best 74 hits on the year and the senior is also tied for seventh in the Conference with 17 doubles.
