Dancers honor Hispanic Heritage

The seventh annual New York Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Sunday, September 19 on Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport will be all about dancing.

The event from noon to 5 p.m. will feature two Queens dance schools. The Lorenz Latin Dance Studio is among the eight of the celebration’s performers. The dance school specializes in New York style salsa and has locations in Glendale and Corona that bring together dancers from throughout the city and Long Island.

“Our dancers are all great students and hard workers,” said Howie Lorenz, owner of The Lorenz Latin Dance Studio. “It will be a great outdoor event which will get everyone in touch with their roots and off their cell phones.”

The dancers of Mambo Bravo also have a passion for New York style “On 2” salsa and techniques that are usually found in nightclub routines. The studio is located in Jackson Heights.

“Salsa has no age and is no longer only a Latin dance,” said Ruby Espinosa, owner of Mambo Bravo. “We have always enjoyed this event because it gives us a chance to spend time outside of our neighborhood. Dancing salsa at Pier 17 exposes our Latin background and opens the doors to other cultures interested in trying it out.”

Along with the dance schools, the audience will also get a chance to enjoy the rhythms and routines of the popular dance from Nelson Moreno and Los Hermanos Moreno.

“It is really wonderful to see the Latin dance schools, which are really one of the cultural centers of Hispanic neighborhoods throughout the New York area,” said Paul McGlothin, president of Arts for Business and creator of the NY Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. “They have a chance to shine and get in touch with their culture. There is nothing like it and you can’t beat the price because it’s free!”
