The company selected to build at Aqueduct officially opened a bidding process of their own with a community outreach event at the Resorts World New York facility on Friday, November 19.
In what figures to be the first of many Aqueduct job fairs, Genting New York welcomed Minority, Women and Locally-owned Business Enterprises (M/W/LBE) to South Ozone Park, where they networked and met with officials from Tutor Perini, the construction company looking to secure subcontractors.
“All of the work at Aqueduct will be subcontracted,” said John Hill, project executive with Tutor Perini. “Whether you are a large or small subcontractor, there will be opportunity for all.”
Genting’s repurposing of the Aqueduct Racino site aims to create 2,100 new jobs and generate more than $300 million in annual revenue for the state and give the city its first casino. The project is expected to create 1,300 construction jobs, as well as 800 permanent jobs consisting of the entertainment, hospitality, security and food service fields.
Mike Speller, President of Resorts World New York, said that Genting wants to begin investing in the community immediately by creating jobs and economic activity.
“That has begun this week and will continue after today. Apart from the construction jobs, there will be countless spillover jobs throughout the community,” said Speller. “It will be a place Ozone Park and all of New York can be proud of. We said from the beginning that we are all about fitting into the community.”
One good resource for connecting to the community would be the Queens Chamber of Commerce, according to Jack Friedman, executive vice president of the Chamber. He said that the Chamber and the Office of the Borough President are here and available to help get the word out when it comes it jobs.
“We know it’s early in the process, but we want them to know that they should be using us as a vehicle to get the message about jobs out to the public,” said Friedman. “I really think the Chamber can help them achieve their goals.”
The timeline for hiring casino-based and other permanent jobs is expected to be released in December. In the meantime, Genting New York recently launched its web site at www.rwnewyork.com. Visitors can find information regarding potential employment and contract opportunities at the Aqueduct Racino.
