As the holidays approach, shoppers gathered around the tree at Queens Center Mall (QCM) for the annual tree lighting ceremony.
City Councilmember Daniel Dromm joined family and friends under the tree on Saturday, November 20.
Jeffery Owen, senior property manager and Dawn Simon, senior marketing manager greeted Santa and Dromm before the tree was lit. Limbo, dancing contests and holiday music made for an exciting night of seasonal fun.
“I’m excited. This is my second time coming to see Santa. I want a new iPod and a new camera for Christmas,” said 11 year-old Deanna Poltiyelova. Her brother David said he wants a Smack Down wrestling ring.
The first 500 people received free wands to help light the tree promptly at 6 p.m. Others received prizes and glow sticks that were thrown out into the crowd.
Holding onto his wand, ten year-old Seeial Mitchell said, “I’m going to help Santa light the tree. I’m pretty much excited!”
Shortly after the tree lighting, a throng of Santa fans followed security upstairs for free milk and cookies. Santa spoke with children individually, as they shared their present wish list with him.
Simon said the Christmas tree will be on display throughout the holiday season and Santa will be available for photos through Christmas Eve.
