Crossing gets four-way stop signs

The Department of Transportation recently fulfilled Councilmember Dan Halloran’s request for four-way stop signs at an intersection after residents complained about the dangerous roadway.

The intersection, at 147th Street and 15th Avenue near Public School 79, has been a “nuisance and a danger for residents of the community,” said Halloran in a statement.

“Hundreds of children walk these streets every day, and it’s our responsibility to protect them,” said Halloran. “Reckless, speeding drivers were endangering these children and degrading this neighborhood.”

Resident Katina Slattery collected 300 signatures from neighbors petitioning for speed bumps to be put in place. However, when Halloran’s office learned that underground utilities would make that impossible, stop signs were substituted. – Jano Tantongco
