So proudly they waved . . .

After receiving news of Osama bin Laden’s death, a 9/11 flag was waved across the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard and 157th Avenue on Sunday night, May 1.

Firefighter Jimmy Sands of Engine 331 joined a growing group of patriotic people waving American flags on the street. As vehicles drove by honking horns and cheering, they shouted "USA!" and smiled.

Joined by the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the 106th Precinct, the flag was unfurled across all three lanes.

Firefighter Raymond R. York of Howard Beach gave his life on 9/11 running towards the towers to help the victims.

“He is missed by many, his life and legacy lives on, and this anniversary will be much better than the past,” said his nephew, Richard York Jr. “For almost 10 years, we waited for bin Laden’s capture. I would like to shake the hands of the men who found him. Thank you to all who remember 9/11 and continue to support the troops.”
