George Gibbons Jr., 37, from Middle Village, was killed over the weekend in an auto accident.
According to police, Gibbons was riding in the back of a Lincoln livery cab just before 7 a.m. Saturday morning traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway service road when a Chrysler Sebring traveling in the wrong direction struck the cab head on.
Gibbons was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.
Both the cab driver and the Sebring’s passenger, 44-year-old Andre McKanney from Jamaica, were also taken to the hospital, said the NYPD.
The police said McKanney was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and they were still searching for the driver of the Sebring, who fled the scene.
Gibbons was the owner of Gibbons’ Home bar on 69th Street in Maspeth.
A wake is scheduled for Tuesday from 2-5 p.m. and Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village. Funeral services are scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at the home, and mass is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. at the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 62-81 60th Place in Ridgewood.
A funeral director said the family is requesting no flowers, and is seeking donations to the George T. Gibbons Jr. Foundation, checks for which can be made out to George T. Gibbons Sr.
