Celebrating Black History Month

City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer saluted prominent African-Americans in his district during his second-annual Black History Month celebration and awards ceremony last Tuesday night, Feb. 28, at the Jacob Riis Settlement House in the Queensbridge section of Long Island City. In all, nine individuals were honored for their contributions to the community, including Cynthia Davis of The Floating Hospital; William T. Newlin, the Jacob A. Riis Center’s executive director, Lashawn “Suga Ray” Martin, local spoken word artist; Raymond Allen and Stanley Simon of the Long Island City YMCA; Carol Wilkins of the Ravenswood Tenants Association; Pam Thrower of the Queensbridge Tenants Association; Annie Cotton Morris of the Woodside Tenants Association; and Robert Burch of Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan’s office. Van Bramer (at left) is pictured with City Council Member Letitia James (at right) presenting a proclamation to Elizabeth McQueen, who accepted it on behalf of Newlin.
