Fresh off the end of the league’s Spring Season, the Middle Village Players Roller Hockey League has rolled into the hot weather with its first-ever Summer season. So far, the season has started with a set of nail-biting games.
The Summer season opener for the MVP Roller Hockey League took place on Tuesday, July 9, and pitted the Bears and Cardinals against one another. A dramatic 4-4 tie after regulation time required a shootout to decide the victor in the summer bout.
The Bears emerged triumphant with a 2-0 shootout win, with the winning goals from Jack and Paul (Paulie) Pogozelski.
Goalie Gino Campo helped secure the victory for the Bears, turning away 41 of the 45 shots faced throughout the game. Campo’s stellar performance in goal ensured the Bears held firm from the Cardinals’ relentless attacks.
Paulie earned the title of star regulation player of the game, netting all four goals for the Bears with assists from Mason Monahan.
On the Cardinals side, the offensive effort was more dispersed. Goals from Jake Browne, Henry Smith, Drew Porr and Anthony Corso kept the Bears on defense.
The Cardinals were previously eliminated by the Dolphins at the Spring season playoffs, a team with Campo in the net.
Additional games held on Thursday, July 11, and Friday, July 12, saw the Bears and the Cardinals secure victories against opposing teams.
Thursday’s game ended in a 4-3 win for the Bears over the Jets. Meanwhile, Friday saw the Cardinals face off and defeat the Dolphins 8-4.
The MVP Roller Hockey players will be busy all summer, with games scheduled three times a week—on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights at 7 p.m., until the end of August.
All games are played at the James Bohan Memorial Rink, located at Juniper Valley Park, in Middle Village.
