Volunteers around Glendale and Maspeth celebrated Earth Day early last Saturday, Apr. 20, by holding community cleanups and recycling events around their neighborhood. In the top photo, the Communities of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together (COMET) civic association joined City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley for a recycling and safety event at Maspeth Federal Savings bank in Maspeth. Among those pictured were COMET President Rosemarie Daraio and Capt. Christopher Manson, commander of the 104th Precinct, whose officers enrolled residents in offered anti-theft programs. Police also teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council and other volunteers for a cleanup and planting session at the Glendale Community Garden. Pictured in the second photo with Manson and police are volunteers, as well as Assemblyman Mike Miller, staff member Dorie Figliola, 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol President Frank Kotnik and Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Joe Aiello. In the bottom two photos, members of CURES (Civics United for Railroad and Environmental Solutions) held cleanups near local rail lines in Ridgewood and Glendale. The left photo shows volunteers at Edsall Avenue and 71st Street; the right photo shows local residents at the corner of Shaler Avenue and 65th Street. Farmers Oval Civic Association President Dieter Vey was among those who pitched in.
