Don’t care about Sunday’s Big Game? Here are your 5 enjoyable alternatives

If the thought of squeezing into a sports bar with a couple hundred inebriated people screaming at a video screen and spilling beer on you isn’t your idea of a good way to spend a Sunday; or if you couldn’t care less about the latest heartwarming sales pitch showing a Dalmatian puppy inspiring a Clydesdale to pull a beer wagon; you may not be alone. But you’d certainly be in the minority, which puts you in an excellent position to enjoy any number of fun activities, usually made “less convenient” by living in a city of ten million people.

Let the Force be with you—With most of humanity off the streets, Sunday is the perfect opportunity to see the new Star Wars or any film you’ve been jonesing to see without the hassle of preordering tickets, standing in line or jostling for a good seat. Plus, fewer viewers in the cinema means less people using their phones during the film, making for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

No Reservations—Having trouble getting into that trendy new tapas restaurant? Whilst most New Yorkers are home or in bars, gorging themselves with Buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks and guacamole, even the normally hottest restaurants are eerily vacant. Treat yourself and a fellow football naysayer to an evening of quality dining, lavished with the sort of attention usually reserved for celebrities or food critics. Savor a three course meal and remember what it means to linger with an aperitif. It’s not like the restaurant will need the table!

Binge benefits—Why waste six hours—if you’re lucky—watching a couple dozen grown men careen wildly into one another, when you can just as easily and more productively spend it binge-watching “Downtown Abbey” or streaming “House of Cards” or treating yourself to a John Hughes marathon? Heck, you can even get into the spirit of the day with a pitcher of margaritas and a bowl of salsa and chips, while you relive the tragedy of Ned Stark and the downfall of the Lannisters.

Under the covers—Whether from the shelf or on your mobile device, grab that book you’ve been wanting to read since forever, pour yourself a glass of vino and lose yourself cozying up to a great read. No one’s going to fault you, nor will you suffer the guilt of feeling “there’s work to do,” since practically everyone else is frivolously spending their day on the Big Game.

Get board—Host your own game day… board game day, that is! Gather all your pigskin poohpoohing pals and break out the party games. Charades, Twister, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories, Taboo… Heck, even Candyland! Add snacks and break out the bubbly for hours of camaraderie and merriment. Peyton who?!
