The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is hosting a series of pop-up events across Queens and select locations in Brooklyn to help bus riders prepare for major service changes set to take effect this summer as part of the Queens Bus Network Redesign.

The outreach campaign began earlier this week with events in Jamaica and continues through May 22. At each pop-up, MTA representatives are stationed at transit hubs and community locations to answer questions, provide route-specific information, and distribute brochures about the redesign. This Saturday, April 26, will be at Green Acres Mall from 4 to 6 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 29, at Queensborough Community College from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by the Queens Village LIRR station from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Queens Bus Network Redesign, one of the largest transit overhauls in decades, will be rolled out in two phases this summer. Phase One begins Sunday, June 29, and includes the launch of 16 new routes, changes to 67 existing routes, and the elimination of five routes. Phase Two follows on Sunday, August 31, introducing one new route, changes to 37 routes, and the discontinuation of one route. Altogether, the final plan includes 124 routes—94 local and 30 express—up from the current 113.

As part of its outreach, the MTA is encouraging riders to explore new planning tools available on mta.info/queensbus. These tools include a route look-up feature with integrated Google Translate, a Remix interactive map to preview changes by route or location, and a Future Trip Planner to visualize trips under the redesigned system.

“Customers can use these resources to understand how their daily commute may change and what options are available to them once the new system is in place,” the agency said in a statement.

The MTA will continue distributing printed materials and staffing key bus stops with uniformed employees throughout April and May. Meanwhile, the NYC Department of Transportation is updating signage at bus stops to reflect the changes ahead of launch.

Passengers are encouraged to sign up for service alerts to receive real-time updates about their routes, including when the changes take effect. Alerts are also available for subway, LIRR, and Metro-North service, as well as elevator and escalator outages.

The redesign is part of the MTA’s broader effort to modernize and improve service across the borough, with an emphasis on reliability, frequency, and better connections to subways and key destinations.
