Lady Cardinals in the trenches; Smith to rely on power game

By Anthony Bosco

This year could be another good one for Smith and her team, which, though small in numbers, is returning one of the better players in the league in sophomore guard/forward Tamara Taylor.

A Curtis High School alum, Taylor was a CUNY all-star as a freshman. The 5-foot-9 starter is planning on making her game more complete this season, focusing on her one-on-one defense and becoming more of an offensive threat from the perimeter.

The team, however, will be hard-pressed to make up for the loss of the team's two premier floor generals last year, point guards Kym Chung and Shatina Brown.

“What we plan to do is have a more defined and power-type game plan,” Smith said. “By doing this we should be able to control the game.”

Queens Vocational's Karin Brown and fellow freshmen Lateenah Spencer, Camille Brown and Ineshi Roberts round out Smith's seven-woman team.

The Lady Cardinals finished behind Staten Island in the league standings last year, a place the club could well occupy again if the team gels together. They open their season Friday at SUNY-Plattsburgh.
