The Queens of Peace eighth graders defeated St. Gregory’s in a very exciting game Sunday, 38-37. Trailing 18-16 at halftime and 28-27 after three quarters, it was a wild final quarter with the game being tied four times in the closing stages.
St. Greg’s hit two free throws with 8.7 seconds left. After a timeout by Queens of Peace, Chris Alexander took the inbounds pass and drove just past half-court and found an open Wice Shaker 25 feet from the basket, where he buried the three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left for the win. Alexander led all scores with 13 points.
Asked after the game about the final shot coach Joe Calamuso said “They executed just the way we drew it up during the time out.”

The Wildcats kept the pressure on in the second quarter, as they scored 10 more points to race to a 20-9 halftime lead. Maldonado led the Wildcats with eight points and Solimando scored four. Jamal Vargas was solid under the boards.
Queen of Peace improved its season record to 9-2.
The Wildcats finished the season on Sunday with a convincing 32-9 win over Sacred Heart to finish with a 10-2 record. John Rodriguez led all scores with a season-high 10 points.
Earlier in the week, Queen of Peace defeated Our Lady if the Blessed Sacrament, 33-23, for their eighth victory. After a slow start, the PeeWee’s picked up their game in the second half, led by Joey Solimando and Jonathan Maldonado, each scoring 10 points in the game. But again, it was their defense that gets the team rolling.
