Led by Nicola Coffey and Michelle Hickman, the St. John's women's track and field team finished fourth at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field championships at Princeton University last weekend. The Red Storm finished behind Big East rivals Georgetown, Seton Hall and Pittsburgh.
After winning the Big East hammer throw with an Irish National record toss of 58.48 meters, Coffey, from County Meath, Ireland, added the ECAC hammer championship to her resume with a toss of 57.72 meters. Red Storm teammate Sheba George placed ninth with a 51.50 mark. The Big East discus champion took third in the ECAC discus with a throw of 46.66 meters. George also placed seventh in the shot put with a mark of 13.14 meters.
Hickman was the only women to jump over 13 meters to capture the triple jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 13.14 meters. For her effort, Hickman was named to the All-East team.
Hollis native Tiehise Shell took sixth place in the 200-meter in a time of 24.63 and the former Jamaica standout also finished sixth in the 100-meter in 12.05. Tiffany Barnes from Queens Village took third in the 400-meter in 55.32 and also earned All-East honors.
Next up for the St. John's track team is the SJU Twilight Meet at DaSilva Memorial Field Saturday.
SJU Golf finishes 26 out of 27 at NCAA East Regionals
The St. John’s golf team’s season came to an end Saturday as the Red Storm finished 26th out of 27 teams at the NCAA East Regional at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. The Red Storm finished the three-day tournament at 54-over par 918.
The Regional was won by East Tennessee State, finishing at 36-under par 828, eight strokes ahead of second place North Carolina State. Florida finished third. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Championships at Duke University's Golf Club.
Sophomore Andrew Svoboda was the Red Storm's top finisher, shooting a two-over par 218 good for a tie for 64th place. Svoboda, ranked 69th nationally by GolfStat, carded a one-over par 73 in the final round. He shot a two-under par 70 in the first round and a three-over par 75 in the second round.
Sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald was St. John's next highest finisher as the Sayville, L.I. native shot a five-over par 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 94th place at nine-over par 225. Junior Joe Saladino finished in 126th place at 18-over par 234 while senior Andrew McKay and freshman Mike Smith tied for 135th place at 31-over par 247.
Roundtree commits
Cardozo's Shavonne Roundtree, a 5-foot-5 point guard who averaged 21 points and seven assists for the Judges, will attend Broward Community College in Florida. Joining Roundtree will be Tottenville guard Zetta Martin.
SJU hurler Goldberg earns All-Big East accolades
St. John's junior pitcher Marc Goldberg was the lone Red Storm representative to earn All-Big East honors as the Staten Island native was named to the All-Big East second team, the conference announced last week.
Goldberg, a transfer from South Florida, anchored the St. John's pitching staff with a 5-6 record and a 3.11 earned run average. Heading into his last outing of the year, when he gave up nine earned runs in an 18-9 loss to Rutgers, Goldberg was ranked in the top-25 in the country in ERA.
The southpaw finished the season tied for the team lead in wins and led the squad in ERA, innings pitched (81) and strikeouts (70). In conference play, Goldberg posted a 3-4 record with a 3.51 ERA.
