State Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose) announced Tuesday the state Senate had passed legislation to name a pedestrian bridge at 46th Avenue and the southbound Clearview Expressway service road in honor of a Bayside boy who was killed there in August 2000.
Christopher Scott was hit by a car and killed as he rode his bicycle across the pedestrian bridge and began to enter the service road, where there was no curb or buffer from the street. In July 1994 John Shim, 10, was killed in the same spot while riding his bike.
The city Department of Transportation has since made changes to the area that include pushing traffic away from the entrance of the service road.
The bill passed in the Senate would name the pedestrian bridge “Christopher’s Crossing,” an action Padavan called “appropriate.”
Padavan had introduced the legislation in the Senate, and the bill was awaiting passage in the state Assembly this week. It is being sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblywoman Ann-Margaret Carrozza (D-Bayside).
