Police Blotter: Man wielding toy gun shot by police in Springfield Gardens

SPRINGFIELD GARDENS – Officers shot a 31-year-old man wielding a black toy gun outside his family’s home about 5:50 a.m. Saturday, police said.

He was taken from the residence at 137-10 Francis Lewis Blvd. to Mary Immaculate Hospital after being shot in the left leg and was listed in stable condition, said police. The man, identified by the New York Post as Winston Nunez Jr., son of a former city police officer, was described by police as “emotionally disturbed.”

Charges against Nunez were pending, and the investigation was ongoing, polic said.

Swastika spray-painted at rear of Bayside school

BAYSIDE – A swastika was spray-painted on the rear of the PS 159 school building at 205-01 33rd Ave. about 5 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

No arrests were made and an investigation was ongoing.

Astoria man charged in death of teen who shot himself

ASTORIA — An Astoria man faces criminal charges after a teenage boy killed himself using his gun, authorities said.

Kevin Chavez of 22-64 42nd St. was arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon last Thursday, a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

Three Bryant High School students, including Chavez’s nephew, were hanging out at his home around noon Jan. 15 when the nephew’s 15-year-old friend shot himself in the eye with a .25-caliber handgun belonging to Chavez, law endorsement sources said. The boy was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he died Friday, a hospital spokesman said.

Chavez did not have a license or permit for the gun, the criminal complaint filed by the district attorney’s office said.

LIC robbery suspect arrested while trying to flee police

LONG ISLAND CITY – Police arrested a 23-year-old man who attempted to flee his apartment to evade officers about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Thomas Singleton of 41-09 Vernon Blvd. was apprehended by police at the rear of his apartment building after sustaining a leg injury, authorities said. He was taken to Elmhurst General Hospital in stable condition.

He was arrested for allegedly committing a past robbery, police said.

An investigation was ongoing.

Man attacked, robbed by five at Jamaica subway station

JAMAICA — A 51-year-old man was knocked to the ground and robbed by a group of five men as he was entering a subway station early Saturday morning, police said.

The man was robbed of $20 and credit cards at the Jamaica Avenue and Van Wyck subway station, police said. The five suspects fled, police said.

The man was to taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.

Police made no arrests and were investigating.

Fleet Bank in St. Albans robbed of unknown amount

ST. ALBANS – A Fleet Bank at 205-2 Linden Blvd. was robbed of an undetermined amount of money by a 6-foot-tall man of medium build in his 30s, police said.

The suspect passed a note to a teller demanding the money, then fled, said police.

No arrests were made and an investigation was ongoing.

Jamaica woman among 18 arrested at demonstration

MANHATTAN – A Jamaica woman was arrested at 43rd Street and Broadway on a charge of obstructing governmental administration during an anti-war demonstration last Thursday at approximately 12:30 p.m., said police.

Elaine Proefried, of 86-44 Edgerton Blvd., was among 18 persons from New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts arrested during the demonstration, police said.

SUV strikes elderly man in Rego Park

REGO PARK – An elderly man was struck by a Chevy Blazer at the intersection of Yellowstone Boulevard and 67th Avenue about 8:40 a.m. Monday, said police.

The victim was taken to North Shore Hospital of Forest Hills in critical condition, authorities said.

No arrests were made, and the investigation was ongoing.

Elmhurst man arrested in Miami for fatal stabbing

ELMHURST – After a six-year investigation, an Elmhurst man was arrested in Miami on Nov. 17 for allegedly stabbing a 24-year-old man to death during a 1996 robbery attempt, police said. He was extradited to New York last Saturday.

On Aug. 17, 1996, Willy Joya, 24, of 35-46 74th St. was rushed to Elmhurst General Hospital after Jorge Hurtado, 30, of 34-34 74th St. stabbed him in the stomach, police said. Joya died in the hospital from his wounds.

Hurtado’s arrest resulted from the investigation by 110th Police Precinct detectives and Transit Robbery Squad officers.

Lefrak City men pleads guilty to two Elmhurst rapes

ELMHURST – A Lefrak City residentpleaded guilty to raping two Elmhurst women in 2000 and 2001, District Attorney Richard Brown announced last Thursday.

Moussa Blade, 20, of 97-20 57th Ave. was arrested in May 2001 in a series of subway robberies of women in Queen. Detectives found his DNA sample matched that found at the scenes of two rapes, said Brown.

Blade admitted to raping and sodomizing a 23-year-old woman in a backyard as she was returning home from the No. 7 train station at 69th Street and Roosevelt Avenue about 4:30 a.m. Jan. 9, 2000.

Blade also admitted to raping and sodomizing a 19-year old woman returning home from the No. 7 train station at 61st Street and Roosevelt Avenue about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 15, 2001.

“The defendant’s guilty plea relieves the fears of women who commute late hours on the No. 7 train, which was the stalking ground of this dangerous sexual predator,” said Brown.

Suspect takes $1,000 cash from Rego Park Citibank

REGO PARK – A Citibank was robbed of $1,000 on Jan. 15 about 3:30 p.m. by a man who did not display any weapon, police said.

The man passed a note to the teller at 95-12 63rd Rd. demanding the money, said authorities. The teller complied, and the suspect fled with the cash.

No arrests were made and the investigation was ongoing.

Man found dead at site of fire in Brookville

BROOKVILLE – A man was found dead Monday at 146-40 222nd St., where a one-alarm fire occurred about 9 a.m., said police.

No arrests were made and the investigation was ongoing.

Five sent to hospital in Jackson Heights crash

JACKSON HEIGHTS — A school bus collided with a minivan Tuesday afternoon, injuring the five people riding in the van, police said.

The school bus, which had no passengers, was traveling west on 30th Avenue when it hit a Dodge Caravan going north on 87th Street at about 3:27 p.m., police said.

A 15-year-old girl riding in the minivan was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center in serious condition, police said.

The other passengers in the van, two adults and two children, were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

No arrests were made and no summonses were issued, police said.

Police were investigating.

Swastika, racial comments found inside Rockaway building

ROCKAWAY – A swastika and anti-racial remarks were spray painted inside a building in the vicinity of Beach 84th St. about 10 a.m. Thursday, said police.

No arrests were made, and the incident is being investigated as a possible bias incident, said authorities.

Biased messages discovered on Rockaway apartment bldg

ROCKAWAY – Anti-black and Jewish writing was found scratched into the wall of an apartment building at 8400 Shore Front Pkwy. about 10 a.m. Thursday, police said.

No arrests were made, and the investigation was ongoing.
