Bradd Wierzbicki and the Cathedral Prep Crusaders did not need to win the CHSAA Class C Friday against Monsignor Scanlan to prove just how good the CHSAA’s leading scorer actually is. But it sure was nice, anyway.

Wierzbicki scored a game-high 20 points in leading the all-boys parochial school, located just behind the Queens Center Mall, to its second CHSAA Class C title in three seasons.

“I think he’s obviously proven time and again that he has a lot of ability, especially on the offensive end of the floor,” said Wierzbicki’s head coach Frank McQuail. “Even today he grabbed some rebounds, boxed out, played some defense, too. He’s really developed into a helluva player. And anyone who thinks that just because he plays in the ‘C’ [he isn’t good] doesn’t understand basketball.”

Wierzbicki, who has yet to decide on a college, averaged 26.2 points per game this season, best not just in the ‘C’, but for all players. Queens College, McQuail said, is one of the schools in the running to land the lanky shooter.

Honor Roll

Marlon Smith may have missed the biggest shot of the weekend, a free throw to send Archbishop Molloy’s semifinal matchup with Christ the King into double overtime, but his 28-point effort against Rice in the quarterfinals should not be overlooked. He also added 20 against CK. Sundiata Gaines added 14 for the Stanners against the Royals, mostly due to his work on the offensive glass … Mitchell Beauford scored a game-high 22 in the Royals’ 60-59 win over Molloy … Jessica McEntee scored 15 points and Rosalyn Gold-Onwude added 12 points and 10 rebounds as Molloy advanced to the CHSAA Class C state finals … Holy Cross sophomore goaltender Matt Cammarata made 27 saves in a 5-0 shutout in game two of a best-of-three CHSHL ‘B’ semifinal series with St. Peter’s … Jason Andjelovic had two goals and two assists to lift the McClancy hockey team to a 7-1 win over Cardinal Spellman in the second game of a CHSHL ‘C’ division series.
