The Kidz Inc. Astros defeated the Gregs Tire and Auto Mets at Alley Pond Park May 20.
This was a well-played game by both teams, as the Astros and Mets battled for second place in the tight race in the Glen Oaks boys’ Major Division.
The Astros had some timely hitting with a bases-loaded triple off the bat of Alex and Danny Quinlin. Sam Hoffman and Joey Babrow pitched well for the Astros. Ryan Persaud and Joey Gillespie also had key hits for the Astros.
The Mets played a great defensive game with 12 of 15 outs recorded in the field. Mike Costanza and Jeremy Goldberg sparkled in the outfield as well as Mets catcher Matt Kruczowy, who was great behind the plate.
Vinny Antonucci, John Barbari and Tyler Brodney have seemed to find their stroke again, which will be big for the Mets as they enter the playoff picture. Mike Mandrin pitched well with a three-up, three-down first but was victimized in the second inning by some walks and the Astros long ball.
Ed Dillon continues to show why he is the most improved player for the Mets this year as he continues to hit and play the field with heart and desire.
After the game, Jon Kruczowy and Tommy Clarkson said that was the prettiest home plate umpire they had ever seen. The Mets are 5-4 with one tie and look forward to their next game against the hard-hitting Pirates.
Joe’s Pizza Cyclones ground Orioles
for seventh straight win
The Glen Oaks International Division Cyclones continued their winning ways with their seventh consecutive victory, a 12-5 grounding of the Orioles.
After the Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Cyclones’ Rahul Kadakia, Jazz Singh and Scott Carey each had base hits to cap a six-run-home first inning. Carey was awarded a game ball for his bases-clearing triple and stellar defensive plays.
Rohan Shah also was awarded a game ball for his two hits and an inning of relief work on the mound. Shah’s hit ignited a three-run fifth inning after the Orioles had closed within 9-5.
Cyclones’ starter Trevor Stark struck out seven batters and walked only three. Trevor allowed only one run on two hits to record the win. Joey Shafer scored three Cyclone runs and pitched a solid inning in relief.
James Wolfin hit his fourth home run of the season and pitched the final inning to close out the Orioles and pick up the save. Other Cyclones’ contributors were lead-off batter Steven Pelan, with four walks and four runs scored. Blake Cholost and Danny Graham each contributed stellar defensive plays to thwart Orioles’ rallies.
For the Orioles, Tim Gallagher put his team into the early lead, scoring the first run of the game.
Jeremy Clark had a base hit and scored two runs, Randolph Herbert had a base hit and an RBI, and Adam Spitz had a bases-loaded hit to plate two runs.
J.J. Peabody Rangers battle Met Food Brewers
On Sunday, May 18, the J.J. Peabody Rangers played the Met Food Brewers at the Oval. Zachary Pournazari hit a home run into deep center field. Devin Gugliemetti and Marcus Choon each hit a triple. Devin’s shot was to left field and Marcus’ was to right field.
Johnny Martini hit two doubles up the middle. Also contributing with hard, solid hitting and going 3-for-3 was J.C. Gallagher. Christen Mendoza and James Sciortino Jr. also hit the ball solid and went 2-for-3. Michael Epstein, playing short stop and left field, made two beautiful plays.
Michael Hovi got hit by a hard shot while playing second base but stayed in the game and made a beautiful grab to get the runner out at second. Bharadwar Ramachandran, playing center field, stopped a hard hit from getting by him to keep the hitter to a single instead of a triple.
Neeloy Azad, playing third base, had two hits to him and stopped both of them. Game balls went to Michael Epstein, Zachary and Neeloy. The Rangers also played the Ideal Barber shop Seals on Friday, May 16, another great game. The game balls went to Shrinit Parikh and Bharadwar.
Burger King Phillies grill Mineola, 11-6
The Glen Oaks Burger King Phillies raised their season record to 4-0 by defeating Mineola, 11-6. Julia Hannigan and Rita Romeo split the pitching duties, with each throwing three innings. The Phillies continue to hit as a team.
Some offensive highlights from the game included Julia Hannigan and Kaitlin Smolen, who each got three hits; Christina Fristachi, Rita Romeo and Jessica Olwell, who had two hits apiece; and Meghan Gratzer, Caliegh O’Rourke, Sara Correa, Colleen Harrison, Kaitlyn Biscotti and Ashley Tolento, who all chipped in singles.
Hillside Paint Depot tops United Queens No. 2
The Hillside Paint Depot Angels defeated United Queens No. 2 this past week, 17-9. Brian Biscotti took the mound and threw five innings while allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out seven.
The Angels offense was supplied by Jay Hausdorf, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs; Steven Figueroa, who went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in; Steven Velez, who had two hits while driving in two runs; Christian Venturella, who singled twice and drove in a run; and Brian Biscotti, who supported his own cause by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
