College Round-up: Queens pair leads Hunter swim team to three wins

By Dylan Butler

Thanks to a pair of Queens swimmers, the Hunter women’s swimming team registered three key wins over the College of Staten Island last week in a CUNY dual meet.

Rita Tolan, a senior co-captain from Woodside, and Claudia Chan, a freshman from Fresh Meadows, each earned CUNY honors after helping the Hawks move into a three-way tie for first with CSI and John Jay.

Tolan was named the CUNY Performer of the Week after the Stella Maris grad won all three of her races: the 200 Medley Relay (2:08.45), the 200 Freestyle (2:23.26) and the 200 Freestyle Medley (1:58.48). Tolan also won the 200 Medley Relay and placed second in the 50 Freestyle in a 136-122 loss to Mount St. Mary.

Chan also won all three of her races, the 200 Medley Relay, the 200 Individual Medley (2:34.16) and the 100 Freestyle (59.09) to earn Rookie of the Week honors. The Cardozo grad added two more wins and a pair of second place finishes against Mount St. Mary.

They weren’t the only ones from Queens to earn CUNY weekly honors.

The sophomore guard from Sunnyside highlighted her week with 11 points and 10 steals in a 51-34 win over Yeshiva.

York center Terrin Johnson was named CUNY men’s basketball Rookie of the Week after the 6-foot-8 former Curtis star averaged 12 points and seven rebounds in a pair of wins for the Cardinals.
