The 103rd Precinct Community Council was scheduled to hold its second “Safety First Crime Prevention Fair” Saturday, while Patrol Borough Queens South was putting the finishing touches on its 14th annual Harmony Picnic planned for Tuesday.
“We want to try to create a means for the police officers to interact with the community,” said Donna Clopton, president of the 103rd Precinct Community Council. “This is just one way to get community involvement.”
The 103rd Precinct, based in downtown Jamaica, will be out Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to talk to residents about crime prevention, she said. The first 50 people to register in anti-theft programs will receive a free car wash from Bayview Car Was on Jamaica Avenue and the first 50 children to register their bicycles will get free helmets, she said.
Food, drink and entertainment will also be available at the fair, to be held at Detective Keith Williams Park, 173rd Street and Liberty Avenue. A rain date of July 24 was set.
On Tuesday the 103rd Precinct will join its counterparts from Patrol Borough Queens South for the Harmony Picnic at Cunningham Park. The annual event will feature food, fun and games, and Con Edison was expected to honor three officers for their work, although the officers had not been selected by Monday afternoon, said Officer George Amonds.
“The cops from the different precincts come together with the people in the community,” he said. “The kids get a chance to meet the officers and they can get together and have a good time.”
Patrol Borough Queens South includes the 100th, 101st, 102nd, 103rd, 105th, 106th, 107th and 113th precincts. The picnic was planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, 196th Street and Union Turnpike.
