As working class New Yorkers rang in 2006, they also rang up a raise in the minimum wage. The new rate $6.75 an hour (up from $6.00 in 2005) went into effect on January 1.
Senator Malcolm Smith called this a “much needed increase” and explained that under the three year plan the wage will increase again next year.
“As of January 1, 2007, the minimum wage rate will increase again to $7.15 an hour,” he said. “Over the course of the next two years, these increases will make a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of workers throughout the state.”
