FH school set for walkathon

Students at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School in Forest Hills are preparing to “walk to a brighter future” with a walkathon fundraiser set to take place on Friday, April 20.
This year’s walkathon, which all students at the school will participate in, will serve as a fundraiser for the school, but contributions are also expected to go to support the Operation Smile organization.
Organizers selected Operation Smile, a worldwide children’s medical charity founded in 1982 that treats children born with facial deformities and works to improve their health and lives, because they felt it would resonate with the students.
“I didn’t want it to be just a fundraiser for the school; I wanted it to be something where the kids could help other kids,” said John Doyle, who is one of the chief organizers of the walk.
In addition to raising money for Operation Smile, a portion of the funds raised will go to upgrading the school’s computer lab and classroom technology.
Students from kindergarten through eighth grade will walk around a one-mile loop along Austin Street and Union Turnpike and then return to the school during the afternoon of April 20.
The students were asked to get sponsors for the walk, and other sponsorship opportunities, which included recognition in the church bulletin and on walkathon t-shirts were planned to raise money for event.
Although most major sponsorship opportunities are already filled, those interested in donating to the walkathon should either e-mail Doyle at john.f.doyle@verizon.net or call the school at 718-263-2622.
