Applications are now being accepted for the Summer Jazz Institute ‘07, which will take place at York College in Jamaica.
In its third year, the Summer Jazz Institute, which is sponsored by College Now, is a tuition-free program that gives public high school students the opportunity to learn more about jazz performance, improvisation and music theory while also earning five college credits. In order to be eligible, students must be sophomores or juniors who attend a New York City public high school.
The program will run from July 9 to August 9, with participants meeting Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will also take part in three performances - one for parents, a graduation performance and a third at the Louis Armstrong House in Corona.
No prior jazz performance experience is necessary, although “the program is looking for standard jazz instrumentation,” which includes trumpets, trombones, saxophones, guitar, piano, bass and drums/percussion.
Students are required to have their own instruments, a basic proficiency in music and must be able to read music. The program will provide all other materials.
Applications for the Summer Jazz Institute ’07 are due by Monday, May 21. Auditions will take place on Friday, May 25 at York College.
