Monserrate funds Corona VAC

City Councilmember Hiram Monserrate joined representatives from the Corona Volunteer Ambulance Corps (VAC) and community leaders to announce the donation of two new vehicles for the area’s emergency care fleet.
The ambulances, in operation since December, were secured by $100,000 in capital funds requested by Monserrate’s office through the Department of Mental Health and Hygiene (DOHMH). The new vehicles are the first additions to the fleet since 1992 and volunteers say they are a welcome addition to the fast growing community.
“I am proud to make an investment in both our community’s health and in the volunteer efforts of our residents,” said Monserrate said. “In one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in the city, we must prioritize our resources to ensure every resident has access to quality health care. Just like the men and women who dedicate hours to the ambulance corps, these ambulances will help save lives.”
The Corona VAC, and many other volunteer ambulance organizations throughout the city, provides vital services to residents in times of crisis.
Monserrate, a former New York City Police Officer, has worked with the organization in order to help them provide emergency services to Queens’s residents for many years, and he greatly respects their work.
During the five years Monserrate has served in the city council, he has focused on working to improve health care service and delivery in western Queens. He has touted securing funding for Elmhurst Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit as well as funding the newly opened Mobile Mammography van.
