With members of her cabinet sitting in front of her, Borough President Helen Marshall touted the numerous development projects currently underway throughout the borough as well as those on the horizon.
During a February 12, Queens Chamber of Commerce breakfast held at the New York LaGuardia Marriott, Marshall delivered an update on projects including Queens West, Flushing Commons and developments in the Rockaways and Jackson Heights. In addition, she spoke at length about the highly anticipated and controversial Willets Point project.
Marshall, who has championed the project for a number of years, praised the Chamber for helping to push the Willets Point project forward and its work on having plans for a convention center included.
“That will be wonderful to the borough; we need to encourage businesses to come here,” Marshall said.
Although Marshall trumpeted many developments currently taking place, she also mentioned that the Silvercup West project - which would add new soundstages, offices and apartments as well as extensive access to the waterfront - would not occur as quickly as previously planned.
“They are going to have to rethink that project unfortunately,” Marshall said.
Meanwhile, Marshall also praised the contributions of her cabinet saying that they are the arms of city government as well as the Queens Chamber for its contributions to helping improve the borough.
“I would like to thank [Chamber President] Al Pennisi for his leadership and dedication to the borough and thank [Chamber Executive Vice President] Jack Freidman for bringing new vitality to the chamber,” Marshall said.
