Actors sought for Caribbean play

Caribbean Cultural Theatre is seeking actors to perform in the season’s final production, “One of Our Sons is Missing,” a provocative play by Godfrey Sealy that looks at HIV in Caribbean communities.
Six adults - two female actors and four male actors - are being sought to fill parts. In addition, the company is looking for designers and technical support personnel.

Scholarship deadline
The deadline is fast approaching for the annual Laparkan-Una Clarke Caribbean-American Scholarship.
Applications - which are available at Laparkan Shipping and Money Transfers locations in Richmond Hill and Jamaica, Queens; Brooklyn the Bronx and New Jersey – must be completed and submitted by April 25.
After the recipients are selected, the fifth annual Laparkan-Una Clarke Caribbean-American Scholarship Award Ceremony will be held on May 15.

‘On the Road’
The Team Jamaica Bickle’s (TJB) big fund-raising “Team Jamaica on the Road to Beijing” concert, scheduled for April 20 at Brooklyn College Performing Arts Center’s Whitman auditorium, is steadily picking up steam and support.
Black Entertainment Television will be taping the show and will broadcast it on their BET and BET J cable channels. In addition, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph will lend her voice to ads for the event, which will help fund TJB’s hospitality efforts for visiting Jamaican athletes at the Penn Relays track meet in Philadelphia later this month and support the organization’s scholarship fund. Concert proceeds also will aid Jamaican athletes preparing for the 2008 Olympics.

Entertainers feted
Two great Caribbean entertainers - singer-songwriter Ken Boothe and music master Winston (Merritone) Blake - will be recognized with lifetime achievement awards on Saturday in Queens. The affair will take place at Mangoville, 187-30 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica.
Organized by Winner’s Circle and WB Radio, the event is primarily a 60th birthday party for Boothe, known for his considerable involvement in reggae and Jamaica’s seductive rock-steady music style.

A break with tradition
Afro-Caribbean Entertainment’s traditional Mother’s Day Caribbean Festival will be breaking tradition slightly this year by featuring young soca stars Patrice Roberts and Nadia Batson, and rapso ensemble 3 Canal along with veteran performers at the two-day event on May 10 and 11.
The show - which will be held at Brooklyn Center for Performing Arts, Brooklyn College - also will feature Caribbean music celebrities Edwin Yearwood; Sugar Aloes, 2008 Trinidad Carnival Calypso Monarch; Black Stalin, Scrunter, Crazy and others. Graham coming to brunch
Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Yvonne Graham will be the guest speaker at the benefit Pre-Mother’s Day Brunch presented by the Caribbean-American Outreach Association on May 4 at Grand Prospect Hall, 263 Prospect Avenue in Brooklyn, from 12:30 to 5 p.m.
The affair includes a fashion presentation by Courtney Washington and Yardman Style, comedian Blakka Ellis and more. Tickets are $75 if purchased before April 22. Royal appearance
Caribbean singer Carol Addison, who reigned as the Queen of Soul in Trinidad and Tobago in the ’70s and ’80s, will be starring in the Back in Times concert in Brooklyn on Saturday at His Majesty International Fellowship Church, 1515 Bedford Ave., (at Lincoln Place) starting at 6 p.m.
