Community Boards meet again

After a summer hiatus, Queens Community Boards will be back in session beginning this month.

The City Charter provides that the city is divided up into 59 Community Districts, each served by an advisory board, composed of up to 50 volunteers who, according to the rules, live, work or “have other interests in the area.”

Queens has 14 Community Boards.

Board members are nominated by City Councilmembers and appointed by the Borough President, to serve a two-year term.

Community Boards have an advisory vote on zoning matters, land use, recommendations for the city budget and other community matters.

They have committees that address specific areas of concern, and report to their respective boards. In some cases, members of the public hold seats on committees.

Both Board and committee meetings are covered by “Sunshine” laws. The meetings are public – except in narrowly defined circumstances – and the public is afforded speaking time.

Agendas and procedures vary from board to board, but each board has an office and a District Manager, who is a city employee. The boards communicate with city agencies and with the mayor through his Community Affairs Unit (CAU).
