Dromm, Van Bramer win seats

By Jeremy Walsh

Democratic nominees Daniel Dromm and Jimmy Van Bramer cruised to victory Tuesday to become the first openly gay Council members in Queens. Dromm, a public school teacher and Democratic district leader, handily defeated Republican real estate investor Mujib Rahman to win the Council seat that covers Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.

Van Bramer, the external affairs director for the Queens Public Library, easily beat Republican Angelo Maragos, a business analyst at Credit Suisse, for the Council seat that covers Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside and part of Maspeth.

Although several poll workers in Queens said the voter turnout was not heavy, polls at PS 69 in Jackson Heights seemed more crowded than other sites around the city Tuesday. More than two dozen voters were awaiting their turn in the booth when Dromm walked in to cast his vote.

“I’ve heard more talk about the Council race than the mayoral race,” said site coordinator Suzanne Knobel.
