Politics as usual is still the name of the game in Albany as the state Legislature last week passed up to $700 million from the federal government in needed education funding. It was unable to get its act together and pass the federally mandated legislation on charter schools that would have made those funds available.
Some $700 million is real money and would have gone a long way to help our insolvent state and troubled school system. It is a squandering of needed resources by a Legislature that deals in self-interest rather than public interest. The Legislature is simply out of control and we must begin to elect independent leaders and thinkers who are not afraid to speak up to party leaders.
As a civic leader who has been engaged in the community for two decades and a candidate who transcends party labels, I will serve the needs of my constituents, not the needs of any party organization.
