Community Health Programs

Parker offers a unique medical model day care program for the frail elderly and disabled, located in the bright, modern setting of Parker’s Community Health Center, in Lake Success, New York. There is a separate program for those with memory loss, and a special Chinese cultural division. Parker’s Adult Day Health Care program is an opportunity for adult children to go to work and address other responsibilities, comforted by the knowledge that their elderly or disabled loved ones are enjoying a world of fun and excellent health care. Services are provided daily, 6 days a week, and include: Door-to-door transportation; an excellent hot meal; supervised activities, such as games, art, music, exercise, and live entertainment; nursing and medical care; physical and occupational therapy; eye care; podiatry; massage therapy; acupuncture; nutrition counseling; and psychological services.

The Alzheimer’s Day Care Center at Parker is a unique, flexible drop-in service that accepts participants at all stages of dementia. We customize schedules to meet the needs of family caregivers. The Center is open six days a week, Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm, Saturdays and holidays, 9am to 5pm. A new Saturday evening session, from 5pm to 11pm, is available. Located on the garden level of Parker’s main building, in New Hyde Park, the Center offers: A beautiful, safe, homelike environment; door-to-door transportation; programs that address memory loss and daily living skills; highly experienced professional staff; a broad range of supervised activities, including crafts, exercise, dancing, music, art, and gardening; bathing, grooming, and personal care; an excellent hot meal; family guidance and support groups.

The Melting Pot Quilt

Created by thirty-five residents, and adorning a lobby wall, the Melting Pot Quilt symbolizes the great cultural diversity at Parker, a microcosm of the melting pot that is New York and America. Each square of the Quilt portrays an important expression of the resident artist’s cultural background. As a popular art activity, the Quilt also brought residents together, resulting in many new friendships and a warm feeling of community. The illustration of the Statue of Liberty at the center of the Quilt was selected by the residents because it was the dramatic harbinger of freedom that many residents or their parents saw when they first came to the United States. It was drawn by Al Gordon, a Parker resident and a former illustrator for Marvel comics. Over the years, Mr. Gordon worked on the drawings of many well known comic characters, such as Batman, Spiderman and Superman, but never for a more appreciative audience than his fellow residents at Parker.

What Are They Saying About Parker?

The Alzheimer’s Day Care Center at Parker, a unique, flexible drop-in service that accepts participants at all stages of dementia, recently began offering a Saturday evening session, from 5 PM to 11 PM, once a month. A plentiful, hot dinner is served, and participants are able to enjoy a variety of activities, watch TV, or just chat with friends and staff, in the Center’s home-like setting, while family caregivers enjoy a well-deserved night out.
