Along with city Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Sunday that the long-anticipated, outerborough-exclusive livery cabs would be green.

The new cabs, which Bloomberg compared to the color of an apple, will be able to legally pick up street hails in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island, as well as Manhattan north of East 96th and West 110th streets.

After many months of deliberation and outcry from yellow cab drivers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed state legislation creating 18,000 permits for the new class of cabs.

“Apple Green is very fitting for the new boro taxis,” Yassky said in a statement. “It’s pleasing to the eye, easy to see from a distance and blends well with the urban landscape.”
