Carl Berner, one of the original members of the Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) and a longtime Middle Village resident, died on Monday, Jan. 7, just a few weeks shy of what would have been his 111th birthday. A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Berner emigrated to the U.S. in 1928, married his wife Margaret (since deceased) in 1936 and settled in Middle Village in 1938. His daughter, Emily, was born in 1943. Shortly after moving to the area, the Berners became members of the Eliot Avenue Civic Association, the precursor of the JPCA, and remained active in the community for 62 years.
