Celebrating Black History In Lic

Public Advocate Letitia James was among those recognized at City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer’s Black History Month ceremony last Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Jacob Riis Settlement House in the Queensbridge section of Long Island City. As noted, Van Bramer presented James (not pictured) with the Distinguished Public Service Award to the Brooklyn resident who is the first African-American female to hold citywide office. Others honored at the event last Wednesday (pictured above) include Jason Alston, secretary of the Queensbridge Tenants Association; Maude Askin, board vice president of the Jacob Riis Senior Center; Sharon Crawford, vice president of the Woodside Tenants Association; Mohammed Diallo of the Long Island City YMCA Sports Department; Ash Exantus, CEO of the Federal Credit Union and Urban Upbound; Patricia Fletcher, vice president of the Astoria/Long Island City NAACP chapter; Marilyn Ford, vice president of the Woodside Senior Center; Clara Jones, vice president of the Ravenswood Residents Association; Laura Thomas, service coordinator for the Ravenswood Houses; Malik Wood, professional dancer and student; and Dr. Bob Lee of WBLS-FM radio and Bronx Net TV.
