Auto unions endorse Avella

By Alex Robinson

Two automotive workers unions endorsed state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) for re-election this week.

Local 246 SEIU Automotive/Mechanical and the Motor Vehicle Operators Union Local 983 announced their support of the two-term incumbent Monday.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Local 246 SEIU Automotive/Mechanical and Motor Vehicle Operators Union Local 983,” Avella said. “I look forward to working with them in the upcoming session, to ensure that the voices of our public safety professionals and working families are heard in Albany.”

The announcements were the latest in a string of union endorsements, which started pouring in after a recent agreement between the Independent Democratic Conference, which Avella is a part of, and mainline Democrats to form a new coalition in the Senate.

The IDC is a breakaway group of five rogue Democratic senators which has controlled the upper chamber with Republicans until the new agreement was reached.
