A man was arrested for attempting to lure a 10-year-old girl walking in the streets alone in Jackson Heights on Friday morning.

The girl was walking along 81st Street a little after 7:30 a.m. when a man — later identified as Jaminton Carela, 29, of Corona — motioned for her to come across the street to him.

When the girl ignored Carela and continued walking, police said, the suspect crossed the street to follow and reach his hand out to her. It was at this point that the victim ran from Carela and yelled for help.

A nearby crossing guard responded to the little girl’s call and confronted Carela at 37th Avenue, where he was able to flee.

He was taken into custody later on that day and charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child.
