Photography students from LaGuardia Community College canvassed Long Island City to “capture its energy, community and markers of cultural significance.”

Those photographs are now hanging in an exhibit at an Astoria Bank at 26-26 Jackson Ave. More than a dozen students attended the opening reception that was held at the branch on Dec. 6.

Curated by Photography Program Director Scott Sternbach, the exhibit features a number of recognizable places and structures such as the waterfront, subway stations, Hunters Point buildings and the International Design Center of New York building at 29-10 Thompson Ave.

“Giving our students an opportunity to showcase their work in a well-trafficked local business is enormously meaningful for our photography students,” said LaGuardia Community College President Gail O. Mellow. “This gives them a taste of life as a working photographer and provides valuable learning about all it takes to curate and execute a photography exhibit from start to finish.”

Astoria Bank, which was established in Long Island City in 1888, recently funded a scholarship program for students pursuing degrees in commercial photography. As part of the program, Astoria Bank agreed to showcase works from students at the neighborhood branch.

The exhibit, titled “LIC Past, Present & Future,” will be on display until April 2017.
