Following a lengthy investigation, detectives picked up two Long Island men on July 27 who are allegedly connected to the deadly shooting of a Bayside man near a Flushing grocery store back in May, police announced.

Roberto Abrego, 23, and Jose Alvarenga, 27, both residents of Princeton Street in Hempstead, NY, face murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges for their alleged roles in the May 31 killing of Fernando Gonzalez-Chavez, 39, of 47th Avenue in Bayside.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, but a source familiar with the investigation indicated that Abrego and Alvarenga are reputed members of the MS-13 gang, and the murder may have been related to gang activities.

Law enforcement sources said Gonzalez-Chavez was gunned down outside a bodega at the corner of 162nd Street and Station Road in Flushing at 12:02 a.m. on May 31. Officers from the 109th Precinct, in responding to the scene after getting a 911 call about shots fired, found the victim with a gunshot wound to his torso.

Paramedics that responded to the location pronounced Gonzalez-Chavez dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
