The number of burglaries across Queens has dropped year-to-date through Dec. 3 compared to 2022, according to the latest crime stats from the NYPD. While the degree of change varies between northern and southern Queens, both areas have experienced fewer burglaries.
In northern Queens, burglary cases dropped 3.5% year-to-date, from 1,878 in 2022 to 1,813 this year. In southern Queens, the number of burglaries fell 7.8%, from 1,149 to 1,059.
The decrease in burglary cases across northern Queens is also evident when comparing the 28-day period from Nov. 5 to Dec. 3 this year to that of last year. During this time, there was a 26.8% drop in burglaries, from 205 last year to 150 this year. Not a single precinct in northern Queens reported an increase in burglary cases compared to the same 28-day period last year.
The most significant 28-day period drop was seen within the confines of the 109th Precinct, which oversees Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace. Burglary cases there fell from 63 last year to 46 this year.
Despite the fact that there have been fewer burglaries across southern Queens year-to-date, the number is largely unchanged over the course of the 28-day period from Nov. 5 to Dec. 3 compared to 2022. The number of burglary cases went up from 82 during the period last year to 83 this year. There was a significant jump in the 103rd Precinct, which covers Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica, where the number increased from six in 2022 to 10 in 2023 over the 28-day period. Additionally, the 105th Precinct, which oversees Bellerose, Cambria Heights, Glen Oaks, Laurelton and Queens Village, experienced an increase from 15 to 19.
These changes, however, were cancelled out by decreases seen in two other southern Queens precincts. The 107th Precinct, which covers Cunningham Heights, Hilltop Village and Fresh Meadows, saw a drop in burglaries from 25 to 21. The 113th Precinct, which oversees Hollis, South Jamaica, South Ozone Park and St. Albans, saw a drop from 9 to 5.
Meanwhile, major crime across the borough — murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny of vehicles — is flat over the 28-day period compared to the same time last year. In northern Queens, major crimes decreased 2.78%, from 1,257 to 1,222. Southern Queens, on the other hand, experienced a 3.79% increase, from 791 to 821.
Northern Queens and southern Queens have experienced very different trends from the 28-day period when examining the total amount of major crimes year-to-date. Northern Queens has experienced an increase year-to-date, up 5.78%, from 14,505 last year to 15,344 this year. Southern Queens has experienced very little change year-to-date, with major crimes having decreased 0.13%, from 10,161 to 10,148.
