A Rockaway Beach man was killed after crashing his vehicle into an overpass near Riis Park on Monday morning. Police from the 100th Precinct responded to a vehicle collision at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach Channel Drive just after 11:30 a.m. where they found the 39-year-old victim unconscious and unresponsive inside the wreckage, according to the NYPD.

EMS responded to the scene and rushed the victim to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. He was later identified as Daniel King of Beach 96th St. in Rockaway Beach.

The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that King was traveling eastbound on Beach Channel Drive when he collided with the overpass. The investigation remains ongoing.

“What happened near Riis Park is a tragedy, and my heart truly goes out to the friends and family of Mr. King,” Council Member Joann Ariola said. “That area is infamous for the road’s curves and the poor blacktop conditions, but I am making it a priority to work with DOT, and have the entire area near Riis Park repaved before the summer.”
