The NYPD has identified the headless man who was found floating in Jamaica Bay off Howard Beach on Friday night as 46-year-old Lukasz Mikolajewicz of Dumont Avenue in Ozone Park, after his family was notified.

Sources familiar with the investigation told QNS that the deceased became decapitated while committing suicide by hanging himself from the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge on Friday night.

“Kudos to the NYPD in identifying this man so quickly, to at least save his family from the heartache of not knowing what became of their loved one,” Council Member Joann Ariola said.

Police from the 106th Precinct in Ozone Park responded to a 911 call of a water rescue off Spring Creek Park just before 9 p.m. on Friday. FDNY pulled the body to shore at the base of the Addabbo Bridge and subsequently pronounced him deceased.

Investigators found a noose hanging from the bridge about 1,000 feet from where the body was found floating.

“This is further proof that we need more mental health services in this city,” Ariola said. “Perhaps, if he was able to find help sooner, this tragedy could have been avoided.”
